Chelsey Gullickson is Defeated by Wozniacki

Chelsey GullicksonChelsey Gullickson (USA) lost her first-round match against Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark), at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York, Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010.

Fighting for her first major title, 2009 U.S. Open runner-up Wozniacki beat NCAA champion Chelsey Gullickson 6-1, 6-1 at Flushing Meadows.

The match began at 11:52 p.m. Tuesday night and ended at 12:53 a.m. Wednesday.

“Thank you for sticking around, even though I know it’s been a long night.” – said Wozniacki while leaving.

This was Gullickson’s Grand Slam debut, just two days after her 20th birthday. Not being ranked and having gotten into the tournament with a wild card, Chelsey couldn’t face Wzniacki from the first set.

“She’s hitting the ball really hard. She has a really great game,” said Wozniacki.

“I know it’s tough to be here for the first time … but I’m sure with experience, she’ll be back and play even stronger.”
