Four Babies Die in Romanian Maternity Hospital

An infant has died and two more were in serious condition after a fire in the intensive care unit of a maternity hospital in Bucharest, Romania on Tuesday.

It is already the fourth time that infants have dies due to fire in the hospital.

“The baby died at the Grigore Alexandrescu Hospital, where the other two were being treated.” – said Dr. Radu Balanescu, the hospital’s medical director.

“Another seven newborns remained in critical but stable condition at the hospital with serious burns.” – he added.

Autopsy test results of the three babies, who died earlier, showed that one of them died from smoke inhalation and other two from lack of oxygen.

All the babies have been identified, but officials are still going to run DNA tests for final confirmation.

“Staff failed to evacuate any babies in the five minutes between the time they placed the emergency call and firefighters got to the burning intensive care unit.” – fire department spokeswoman Anca Onofrei said.

The Romanian press was also critical Tuesday of the staff’s response, saying it showed the weakness of the Romanian health care system.
