Madonna’s “Material Girl” served more purpose than just a hit song back in 1985. Now, more than two decades later it is the name of her new clothing line for Macy’s. It wasn’t just the pop icon’s brains in the operation. This was a mother daughter collaboration. While her daughter, Lourdes wasn’t the face of the campaign, she can still call the label hers. Her mom says most of the thought behind the line was her daughter’s, stating, “Since I have a few careers going, I decided that I wasn’t going to get into designing this line by myself… No question, Lola seemed the perfect choice. She is really doing most of the work. She shows me things and I go ‘that’s cool’ or ‘that’s not cool.’ We both go to business meetings. We exchange ideas, talk things out and even disagree about some things, though rarely.”
Macy’s is betting on its lucky stars that young women will be hung up on its Material Girl collection. In time for back-to-school shopping on the East Coast, “Gossip Girl” actress and rocker Taylor Momsen, who’s the face of Material Girl, will perform in an acoustic concert in the juniors department at Macy’s Herald Square flagship in New York, where the store windows will be turned into a virtual “Material World.”
We all know that layers are huge, especially for Fall, so this line has debuted just in time. At reasonable prices, teenage girls will be able to buy what’s trendy, but also save some money. Favorites include, the blazer, the v-neck cardigan, and the studded leggings.
While most of the line is for those in their adolescence, there are still a few pieces that can be worked into a “big girl” wardrobe. That way you don’t have to feel like you’re on your way to a middle school dance, but still feel fashionable in a fun and funky way.
